As the Student Governance and Development (SGD), we are a department which is located to help you to reconnect with your hidden potential. We welcome you to Nelson Mandela University where you will be equipped for the world of work and life in general.
Our value proposition is guided by the university motto, “CHANGE THE WORLD” and pronounces our focus on supporting the academic project of the university by contributing to the value chain of student learning through cultivating graduate attributes to produce holistically developed crop of students who are critical thinkers with excellent communication and interpersonal skills ready to make meaningful contribution to change the world. Furthermore, our value proposition focuses on adding value to produce conscious graduates who make a positive impact on the society as responsible global citizens.
As a student at Nelson Mandela University, we provide you with opportunities to unleash your hidden potential. This is done through cultivation, nurturing and incubation of your untapped talent to hone your skills through various programmes and initiatives offered by the department. As students, you will be given an opportunity to participate in different student associations/structures including political, religious, academic, development and others. Your participation will lead you to become a conscious and responsible citizen ready to lead and serve the society with civility and dignity. I encourage our students to make effective use of these structures and follow our social media pages for regular updates.
As a department, we pursue to add value to promote social development of students with a focus on social cohesion initiatives which embraces the value system of Nelson Mandela University including “Diversity, Excellence, Ubuntu, Social Justice and Equality, integrity and environmental stewardship”. We are at a centre of stimulating economic transformation through our student entrepreneurship initiatives. This has seen more students playing a vital part in entrepreneurship development in the rural and township areas.
We work in partnership with students and other internal and external stakeholders around various student development initiatives. These partnerships are student centred, and a programme content is co-created and implemented with students.
I am privileged to be tasked with a role of leading a strong and dynamic team that supports student academic and developmental aspirations.
