What is BtC?

Beyond the Classroom (BtC) is an online personal and professional development program designed to help you grow as a leader, citizen, and future professional — alongside your academic studies.

BtC is delivered in an asynchronous online format, meaning you can complete activities in your own time. However, the programme runs over 8 months, and there are set deadlines that you are expected to meet. This helps you stay on track and build good habits around accountability and time management.

The programme is aligned with Nelson Mandela University’s values and is designed to strengthen Nelson Mandela University’s graduate attributes, supporting you to graduate as a confident, ethical, and socially responsible individual.

 

What you’ll gain from BtC

By taking part in BtC, you’ll develop skills and qualities that directly enhance Nelson Mandela University’s graduate attributes, including:

• Leadership and responsibility – leading yourself and others with confidence and integrity
• Cultural awareness – engaging respectfully with diversity and different perspectives
• Effective communication – building strong interpersonal and relationship skills
• Active citizenship – understanding your role in your community and society
• Career readiness – developing transferable skills for life after varsity
• Self-awareness and ethical awareness – reflecting, growing, and acting with respect for yourself and others

 

Volunteer Experience (Compulsory)

As part of BtC, you are required to complete 20 hours of volunteer work.

• The 20 hours are compulsory to complete the programme
• You may volunteer at any organisation of your choice
• This experience supports Nelson Mandela University’s commitment to engaged citizenship while giving you practical, real-world experience

 

What’s New for 2026

For the first time, BtC will be delivered through the BtC App, making it easier to access content, complete activities, track deadlines, and stay updated — all in one place.

Applications for the 2026 BtC Programme:

• Open: 10 February 2026
• Close: 16 February 2026
• Limited to: 150 students

Due to the high number of applications received, we’ve now closed the process and are unable to accept any further submissions for 2026.
