Nelson Mandela University’s groundbreaking initiative, ‘Tangible Africa’, has achieved a remarkable milestone with its annual #Coding4Mandela event. From its humble beginnings only two years ago, the event has surged forward, drawing an impressive 16,000 participants across Africa in its 2023 edition.
Professor Jean Greyling, the driving force behind the project and the head of the Computing Sciences Department, expressed his excitement at the overwhelming response. Learners and educators joined the coding event across 500 schools in nine provinces, reaching countries like Zambia and Kenya.

This success goes beyond coding; it is about fostering 21st-century skills like teamwork, critical thinking, and creativity. As the achievement continues to gain momentum, it has gained recognition from prominent figures like President Cyril Ramaphosa, who acknowledged the initiative during his recent Mandela Day address.

Support from sponsors like AWSinCommunities, BASF, and S4 Integration have played a crucial role. Gideon Smith from S4 Integration stated, “We’re boosting STEM awareness.” This collaboration highlights the collective effort to drive change.

From KwaZulu-Natal to Zambia, the coding enthusiasm is evident. Krish Govender, the KZN coordinator, highlighted the dedication that brought almost 3,000 learners into the fold. It’s not just an event – it's about sparking a lasting interest.

Nelson Mandela University’s Tangible Africa: where sparks ignite, and coding lights the way to progress. The #Coding4Mandela event isn’t confined to screens; it’s about sparking minds and guiding learners toward shaping their future.
