Recent incidents have prompted a collective call for vigilance amongst Nelson Mandela University students transversing the Summerstrand area and broader locales, including North End, Missionvale and Govan Mbeki. Reports of armed robberies involving individuals in a silver vehicle without a number plate, have raised concerns throughout these areas.
While Summerstrand was historically considered safe, this spate of criminal activity has led to concerns of safety in other areas. Reports hint at a group involved in illicit acts nearby, prompting concerns about the overall security of these localities. Understandably, students and residents now grapple with unease, fearing that they might become targets.

A student shared “Some of us walk to campus every day to attend lectures, I really hope the police find these people.”

Images circulate of students falling victim near various locations, and similar cases occurred near residences. Thankfully, earlier incidents were swiftly resolved due to police action.

In response, strong recommendations advise students and residents to avoid walking alone, especially at night, and to secure valuables. The university offers self-defence classes, empowering individuals with skills to navigate these situations. Emthonjeni, a counselling centre, supports those affected. Proactively, whistles have been distributed for personal use.

By embracing these resources, individuals enhance personal safety and contribute to a more secure environment across Nelson Mandela University campuses, and surrounding areas. Adhering to safety guidelines and engaging in available programmes remains pivotal in maintaining collective security.
